OU Student Research and Performance Day

The University of Oklahoma Graduate College, Graduate Student Senate, Honors College, and K20 Center will be hosting the annual Student Research and Performance Day (SRPD) on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the National Weather Center located on the University of Oklahoma South Research Campus (Google Map to the Weather Center). Graduates, undergraduates, and kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) students will be brought together for this unique forum to present their current research, paintings, photography, sculpture, video, etc. through the use of portfolios, posters, and slide or video shows. Students from all academic areas are welcome to participate and to describe their current research using a poster/portfolio presentation.

The K20 Center would like representation from K-12 students in the primary, intermediate, middle, and high school grades. Twenty to twenty-four K-12 student projects will be selected for display at the OU SRPD. The K20 Center is asking K-12 teachers to encourage students to begin thinking about what they could do to highlight the research process while utilizing process skills in a scientific and/or interdisciplinary approach. We believe this is an excellent opportunity for your students to participate in an innovative conference highlighting outstanding student research at OU and from across the state of Oklahoma.

We are looking for outstanding student research projects that utilize and exemplify the principles of inquiry and scientific thought.  Inquiries and projects from grades K through 12 will be considered.  Projects will be selected on the basis of their appropriate and creative use of the scientific process and will be displayed on posters.  The projects can relate to life science, earth science, or physical science but the process by which these areas are explored is much more important than content complexity.  We would like to showcase our young scientists using scientific thinking to answer authentic questions or address realistic problems.  This is a great opportunity for students to observe work done at the university level, to talk with real scientists in various fields, and to become motivated to seek out the possibilities that exist for them in the scientific community.

Application Process

Teachers who have students who would benefit from this experience should access the following link.  The project does not need to be completed at the time of submission. This link serves as the application form for Student Intent.  The deadline for student intent to apply is October 10, 2008.  Approximately 20 - 24 projects will be selected to display their results at OU SRPD event.
