REESE Science Initiatives are the components of an NSF research grant awarded to the K20 Center. There are two professional development opportunities associated with REESE that are targeted toward science teachers in grades 7 through 12. Both programs provide professional development in the area of inquiry as well as technology incentives related to science instruction.

Probing into Inquiry in the Classroom (PIC)

A full-day workshop at the University of Oklahoma in which secondary science teachers explore classroom inquiry techniques using scientific data collection probeware. Participants receive a temperature probe a computer interface device for their school.  Workshop participants will be asked to participate in the ongoing NSF research study as part of their involvement in the workshop.

PIC participants will explore inquiry learning techniques utilizing scientific probeware and learn how sensors can enhance scientific inquiry in the classroom.  Each participating teacher will receive a Vernier LabQuest and temperature probe for their school.  This technology gives students access to  precise and authentic data collection that can be used to increase understanding of scientific content and process.

The workshop date is September 10, 2008.  Science teachers in grades     7 - 12 may participate in the workshop and research study.  To register for the workshop, click on this link and complete the form: PIC Workshop Registration.  Enrollment is limited to 50 teachers, so sign up early!

PIC Workshop Date:    Wednesday, September 10, 2008
PIC Workshop Time:   8:30-4:30   Lunch will be provided.
PIC Workshop Location:  K20 Center on the OU Research Campus

KREST (K20 Research Experience for Science Teachers) Institute

A two-week authentic summer research experience for teachers with OU scientists in conjunction with workshops exploring novel approaches to science instruction. The experience is integrated through an additional two-day workshop emphasizing planning through collaboration. Participant groups receive professional development during the subsequent school year at the school site. The focus of these sessions is the creation and refinement of quality classroom lessons using a collaborative action research approach. Participants receive a stipend of $100 per day, housing, a lap-top computer, and probeware for the school. Teachers are encouraged to apply with another teacher(s) from their own school to maximize the opportunity for collaboration during the school year.

2008 KREST Dates
  • Summer Research Session - June 16 - 27
  • Lesson Planning Session - July 28 - 29
  • Lesson Observations and Reflection Sessions - During 2008-2009 School Year
